With the new masking functionality, we needed to make it possible for both vector-based as well as bitmap-based masks to live together in harmony.Product Detail Product Tags Related Video Feedback (2) A rather common example of these grayscale bitmap-based masks can be found in Photoshop’s layer masks. In essence, the new AI-based masks create a grayscale image, where lighter values represent varying levels of selection and pure black represents no selection being made to that area. The new AI-based masks, however, require bitmap, or image-based, support. ![]() Vector-based masks are useful for avoiding creating large files and catalogs, which would eat up valuable hard disk space and make synchronization slower. This meant that small amounts of data could be used to represent even complex masks on very high-resolution images. … Previously, the only types of selections that were supported were vector based, meaning that any adjustment made via brush or gradient were recorded as mathematical expressions. But I apparently the new masks (at least the select subject / sky) are bitmap based while the old ones where vector based - and that was the need for the new lrcat-data file, I presume.įrom: From the ACR Team: Masking Reimagined Well I don’t have LrC 10.4 installed anymore, so hopefully somebody else can check it. Let’s hope they transfer between 11+ catalogs with the DNG/ xmp method. Obviously, one could not open such a DNG file in a previous version of LrC and expect to see the masks. I haven’t checked how the new LrC 11 mask features are saved (if at all) in the DNG (or xmp) file. If the corrections the other party wants to make are slight and relative, they can use the quick develop panel to, say, increase the exposure +1 stop, relative to what it was before. So if they inadvertently reset the photo you send them, they can always load any of the named snapshots that are contained inside the DNG, to restore their slider values. Better still, use the Update DNG preview & Metadata command in the Metadata menu: this way a jpg preview corresponding to the last state of your edits is also saved inside the DNG. Just remember to select the original DNG and press cmd or ctrl + S to save the metadata to the DNG file. Virtual copies share their snapshots with the original image. (Unedited, Basic-edits, Color-Version, B+W-version, My-Final-version and so on) You can even do these various edits using separate Virtual copies and create snapshots there. You can have as many snapshots as you want. You cannot do exactly what you are asking: if somebody gets the Dng you send them and opens it in LrC, Lr or ACR they will get your final slider values.īut if you use LrC, you can save different sets of these edit values as snapshots. The DNG file has inside it a lot of parts: a part that contains the unchangeable raw data, and some parts that contain metadata, profiles etc as well as the edits you do, saved as text instructions that can be altered, that correspond to the slider values you refer to.
